FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling)

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is a process that works by extruding a thermoplastic material and depositing it layer-by-layer in the Z direction fusing it to the layer beneath it to form a 3D model.

When a durable part is needed FDM parts can be produced using production materials such as ABS and polycarbonate. Prototypes made of these materials are very stable, they do not change shape, grow, or shrink over time. They also work in higher heat environments. (up to 200 degrees F)

Another advantage to the FDM process is the bonding ability of the ABS material. Large parts that are bigger than the machines build envelope can be grown in sections, fixtured and bonded together.
